Special Master

A focused process for recurring disputes.

Structured attention to the issues that can keep families from moving forward.

A considered approach.

Special Master services offer a defined process for addressing particular disputes within the scope of an appointment. The emphasis is on clear communication, focused information, and practical attention to the issue presented.

Areas of focus

  • Parent-time scheduling disputes
  • Extracurricular activity issues
  • Expense reimbursement disagreements
  • Communication and implementation issues
  • Other matters within the appointment
Understanding the scope

Clear authority. A focused dispute process.

Rachel Maxwell-Booker

A Special Master is appointed by the court to assist with specified disputes. Under Utah’s parenting-dispute rule, appointment requires the parties’ stipulation, and the court defines the term, scope, and compensation.

The work may address parent-time, co-parenting, child-related expenses, and implementation of parenting plans or related orders. When authorized, the Special Master may issue written directives, which are delivered to the parties and filed with the court.

Authority is limited by the appointment and existing orders. Sanctions require specific court authorization, and a Special Master cannot make a contempt finding. Directives remain subject to court review.
