Preparing for mediation

Arrive prepared.
Make room for progress.

A practical guide to your mediation with Rachel Maxwell-Booker.

Before your session.

Use this checklist to prepare. Mediation will be conducted virtually unless otherwise arranged in advance.

01 · Confirm the arrangements

Names, paperwork & participation

  • Provide party and attorney names and contact information as requested for conflict screening and coordination.
  • Review and complete the mediation agreement and any requested paperwork before your session.
  • Confirm that all participants and any attending attorneys know the date, time, and virtual meeting arrangements.

Booking alone does not complete conflict screening or replace the mediation agreement. The firm will confirm whether it can assist.

02 · Organize your priorities

Issues, options & documents

  • Make a short list of the issues you hope to address, your priorities, and possible solutions.
  • Have relevant orders, agreements, and documents available. Follow the firm’s instructions for sharing documents.
  • For financial issues, gather relevant income, expense, asset, and debt information. For parenting issues, consider current orders, school calendars, and proposed schedules.

Please wait for instructions before submitting confidential documents or detailed accounts of the dispute.

03 · Prepare your space

A private place to participate

  • Use a quiet, private location with reliable internet, a working camera and microphone, and access to your documents.
  • Test your device and meeting link beforehand and keep your charger nearby.
  • Arrange for children to be elsewhere and outside hearing distance during the session.

Contact the firm in advance about accessibility needs, safety concerns, separate participation arrangements, or an alternative to virtual attendance. You do not need to share sensitive details in your initial message.

04 · Understand the process

A neutral, guided conversation

Rachel serves as a neutral mediator, rather than as either party’s attorney. Her role is to help participants identify issues, explore options, and consider possible agreements.

Mediation does not guarantee a settlement. Participants may seek independent legal advice before, during, or after mediation.

Review the mediation agreement for confidentiality terms and their limits, participation expectations, and how any agreements will be documented.

Fees & cancellation

Plan for payment.

$350 per hour, typically divided equally between the parties, with a two-hour minimum. All fees are due at the time of service.

If either party is unrepresented, a deposit of $500 total is required at least 72 hours before the session. The deposit is applied toward mediation fees; the remaining balance is due at the time of service.

Cancellations made less than 72 hours before the scheduled session incur a two-hour cancellation fee ($700), typically divided equally between the parties. Any deposit paid will be applied toward that fee.

For a deposit, contact the firm for the appropriate payment instructions. To cancel or reschedule, use the link in your booking confirmation or contact the firm promptly.
